The British Association of Teachers of Arabic (BATA) and the University of Manchester are very pleased to invite you to the 2023 BATA 3rd Annual International Conference, to be held at the University of Manchester, 6th – 7th July 2023. All presentations are expected to be delivered in person.

The Conference is designed to offer a platform for teachers, students and research scholars of Arabic language, culture, literature, linguistics and translation from the United Kingdom and beyond, to exchange ideas, share good practice and disseminate their scholarship and research to a wider audience. It also aims at facilitating greater collaboration and links between teachers, students and scholars in the field in the UK and abroad.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Abstracts can be submitted in both Arabic and English. Arabic abstracts should be accompanied with a brief summary in English. Abstracts should not exceed 250 words, with clear goals and relevance to the theme of the conference.

The Conference invites abstracts from individuals and panels. Individual papers will be grouped by themes and assigned a chair.

Panels should consist of a minimum of four papers, with a clear objective and relevance to the theme of conference.

All abstracts should be submitted by no later than March 3, 2023. Proposals will be blind reviewed by members of the organising Committee. Participants will be notified of the outcome of their submission by no later than March 28, 2023. Below are guidelines for submission of individual presentations, panels, workshops and posters.

Presentation Proposals:

Submissions should contain the following:

  1. Author name(s),
  2. Affiliation and a contact e-mail address,
  3. Title of the presentation,
  4. Abstract in the language of the presentation (250 words). The language used in the abstract will be considered the language of presentation at the Conference.
  5. A short summary of your abstract (max. 150 words) in English (if the language of the presentation is not English)
  6. References and figures can be added.
  7. Each presentation will be allocated 20 minutes and 10 minutes for Q/A.

Panel Proposals:

Panel proposals need to consider the following:

  • Title of the proposed panel
  • Names and contact information for chair and discussant(s), if known.
  • A brief (up to 300 words) statement summarizing the rationale for the panel.
  • For each presentation on the panel: title, 200-word abstract, and a bio. for each presenter. These can be submitted by the panel organiser or corresponding author.
  • Panels should consist of a minimum of 3 papers, with a clear objective and relevance to one of the themes/sub-themes of the conference.
  • Each Panel is expected to be 90 minutes long.

Workshop proposals: The proposal must contain the following:

  1. Author name(s),
  2. Affiliation and a contact e-mail address,
  3. Title of the workshop
  4. Abstract in Arabic or English (250 words).
  5. A short summary of your abstract (max. 150 words) in English (if the language of the workshop is not English)
  6. A workshop is expected to be 45/50 minutes long.

Poster proposals must contain the following:

  1. Author name(s),
  2. Affiliation and a contact e-mail address,
  3. Title of the poster,
  4. Abstract in Arabic or English (250 words).
  5. A short summary of your abstract (max. 150 words) in English (if the language of the poster is not English)
